On Wind?Driven Energetics of Subtropical Gyres

چکیده

The flow of energy in the wind-driven circulation is examined a combined theoretical and numerical study. Based on multiple-scale analysis, we find mesoscale field ocean interior strongly affected by, but does not feed back onto, ventilated thermocline. In western boundary region, associated currents first appear as coastal jets, conserving mean energy, later separated jet extensions where energized by field. It zone primary loss general to occurs. These ideas are tested an analysis regional 1/12° primitive equation model North Atlantic. predictions theory generally supported results. one exception that topographic irregularities spawn eddies, although these eddies contribute modestly budget. We therefore conclude sink wind input into jet, interior. also shows be much smaller than fluxes; thus, largely recirculates energy.

Forecasting Challenges Associated With Tropical Cyclones Within Subtropical Gyres

This case study examines the complex history of a tropical storm that formed southeast of a large subtropical gyre. In real time the tropical stormwas incorrectly identified as being two separate storms, and at one time was mislocated by 465 km. The unique forecast problems associated with tropical cyclones within a subtropical gyre are described. The tropical storm propagated around the gyre a...

On the interannual variability of nitrogen fixation in the subtropical gyres

Time-series observations of geochemical tracers and diazotroph abundances in the northern subtropical gyres suggest variability in nitrogen fixation on interannual and longer timescales. Using a highly idealized model of the biogeochemistry and ecology of a subtropical gyre, we explore the previously proposed hypothesis that such variability is regulated by an internal “biogeochemical oscillato...

Genomic and Metabolic Diversity of Marine Group I Thaumarchaeota in the Mesopelagic of Two Subtropical Gyres

Marine Group I (MGI) Thaumarchaeota are one of the most abundant and cosmopolitan chemoautotrophs within the global dark ocean. To date, no representatives of this archaeal group retrieved from the dark ocean have been successfully cultured. We used single cell genomics to investigate the genomic and metabolic diversity of thaumarchaea within the mesopelagic of the subtropical North Pacific and...

An Idealized Model Study of the Mass and Heat Transports between the Subpolar and Subtropical Gyres

The response of an ocean model of the subtropical and subpolar gyres to idealized surface forcing anomalies that mimic the thermal and mechanical forcing associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is analyzed. Emphasis is given on the subpolar gyre and the mechanisms that drive the mass and heat exchanges between the two gyres. First, steady anomalies are applied. Surface heat flux an...

Anticyclonic eddies are more productive than cyclonic eddies in subtropical gyres because of winter mixing

Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous features of ocean circulation that modulate the supply of nutrients to the upper sunlit ocean, influencing the rates of carbon fixation and export. The popular eddy-pumping paradigm implies that nutrient fluxes are enhanced in cyclonic eddies because of upwelling inside the eddy, leading to higher phytoplankton production. We show that this view does not hold for...
